Verbal Abuse Campaign by Yamp;R

Dubai based agency Yamp;R have created a campaign with KAFA to highlight the effects of verbal abuse, entitled ’Words Hurt’.Using visual wave forms of abusive words as ever lasting scars left by verbal abuse, is not only clever but emotionally effective to the viewer. The strap line ’don’t suffer in silence’ is also pretty genius.Back when I was at Secondary school, my closest friend turned to me one day in Science class and said, amp;quot;I’m going to call you a name... and It’s going to really hurt youamp;quot;, I laughed with intrigue and told him to come at me with the best he could think of, he leaned closer and in a calm voice said, amp;quot;you’re a dummyamp;quot;...I laughed it off until I saw how serious he looked, and without a word, turned his back and left me in silence for about ten minutes. He had thrown the silliest word he could think of at me and yet as I sat there alone, I started wondering if he was actually being serious, was i a dummy?Considering we used to sit there stabbing each other with compases, what he had said was actually quite hurtful. It turned out his older brother had done the same thing to him the night before, but it goes to show that it’s not all down to the words them selves but the emotion and intent at which they are delivered and more importantly by who.

AstronautDinosaur

Astro Dinosaur are a series of painting by Scott Listfield that span over a decade. His work is inspired by Kubrick’s 2001: Space odyssey showing scenes of an astronaut exploring the modern world and surrounded by present culture with a holiday snap style execution. Sci-fi books and movies made us believe we would be living in space, flying cars and working in unity towards furthering humanities quest for knowledge and exploration. Although the astronaut is expressionless, you can’t help but share in his disappointment at how far we have not come. His work truly fascinates me, you can see more on his portfolio.

Our illustrious leader Craig, is gearing up to run the 2013 Virgin London on Sunday the 21st of April in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.With a few marathons already under his belt, all of us at Brilliant HQ are confident he will smash his previous times and raise a butt load of money in the process... he may look like a bit of a hobo but we know he has been training harder than Rocky 4 (the one where he grows a beard and lives in a barn) for the event. You can sponsor Craig via Just Giving, and follow his training progress here.

The City

The City is a collection of dioramas, crafted by US artist Lori Nix based around her ideas of a possible post-apocalyptic future. Nix grew up in Norton, Kansas and was accustomed to extreme acts of mother nature: tornado’s, floods, hailstorms, and insect infestations. The diorama collection started life a few years ago. Control Room, which was inspired by Chernobyl, brings to mind Hurricane Sandy and New York’s flooded subways.“Our life as we know it is spinning wildly out of control and we may not be able to finance our way back to a healthy planet,” says Nix. This is The City’s premise, though Nix doesn’t specify exactly how human beings have screwed up the planet-and, ultimately, become extinct. “It could be climate change, nuclear annihilation, a virus. I leave it up to the reader to decide. But if you were the last person left alive, these are the scenes you might find.”

Dave Engledow has created an amazing photo series that I think most of us Dad’s can relate to in some small way, about his relationship with his daughter Alice bee and his role as a father. I often feel that I fail when it comes to supervising my son, such as meal times, the random things he puts in his mouth or the heart stopping ’sofa somersault’ he decides to perform the moment your back is turned.View more of Dave’s photo series.

Ghosts of War

Dutch historian Jo Hedwig Teeuwisse has released her photo series Ghosts of War, where she blends the present day and the original World War II pictures of the same place into one.Jo spends hours looking for the locations and taking pictures that match the originals, and then photoshops them to combine the war ghosts into the current settings.“I try to make people realise that history is all around us. That where you live, work or go to school, once people fought, died or simply experienced a different kind of life. We are history, history is us,”.

Dumb ways to Die

Dumb Ways to Die is a beautifully animated Melbourne Metro Trains transport safety ad which features colorful characters singing a catchy tune as they set fire to their hair, poke a stick at a grisly bear, get their toast out with a fork or use their private parts for piranha bait. The video is also designed to demonstrate the danger and stupidity of playing on train platforms, tracks and level crossings by the myriad of other dumb ways to die.The song is performed by Melbourne artist Tangerine Kitty, the song was produced by Cat Empire keyboards player Ollie McGill.Along with the song and clip on iTunes and YouTube, Metro Trains are developing posters and announcements at stations and educational material for school students.

ITV Major Rebrand

ITV are set to introduce their major re-brand across its entire business early next year, including a new logo and refreshed identities for all its channels, including ITV1 changing to just ’ITV’.The new logo which has been designed in-house drops the rather formal previous style which has been established for the last six years for a curvier typeface and layout that is meant to look like amp;quot;a form of human handwritingamp;quot;.The logo has four colors that are the amp;quot;perfect pointsamp;quot; on the color spectrum. But this new logo is intended to be a chameleon and will sometimes change according to the show or channel using something that ITV is calling amp;quot;color pickingamp;quot;.All ITV channels will go live with new branding simultaneously in 2013 so I might actually turn the TV on for a change to see it in action! So what do you guys think to the new identity? I’m sure it’s going to get a lot of stick but I for one really like the new approach.
